This year for Nurse's Week we wanted to hear from the nursing professionals who make so much possible for our patients. At Angel MedFlight, we’re proud this includes seventeen of our own team members.
This week we are celebrating RNs everywhere, including nurses on our team and around the community. We we wanted to learn what moves the women and men who inspire and support so many patients and their outcomes every day. We asked what makes being an RN rewarding...
“I find nursing to be not a job, but a calling. Nursing is a profession that allows me to be present with people at the lowest point on their lives either changing that trajectory, or easing their transition. I have found it to be both physically and emotionally exhausting at times, however more rewarding than words could ever convey. I simply cannot, even after 37 years, imagine having chosen a different career path.”

“I became a Nurse because of my Grandfather. I was very close to him as a child and later when he was placed in a Nursing Home I took a job there as an Orderly to take care of him and the other residents. This ultimately inspired me to attend Nursing School. My primary motivation for continuing as a Nurse for the past 32 years is to support Patients in their illness believing that suffering is efficacious and not without purpose in the eternal perspective. The etymological root of the word Compassion means to “Suffer With”. I strive to have Compassion for my Patients to support them in their suffering and to hopefully lift a small portion of their burden. I find that it is in giving that I actually receive, which for me is personally rewarding and is why I am a Nurse.”

“Nursing is rewarding to me because I am able to connect with patients and families on a personal level. In my years as an intensive care nurse I have cared for critical patients where families are in crisis. Often this may be at the most difficult time in their lives, a time when they are faced with a tremendous amount of emotional and physical pain. Nursing is so much more than performing the daily tasks necessary to keep patients stable, it is about providing care from deep within our soul to ease their suffering, providing hope even when it takes on a form other than curative, and doing so without hesitation.
Maya Angelou has a quote that can be expanded and paraphrased in a way that summarizes my passion and reward as a nurse:
Your patient and their family members may forget your name, they may forget the conversations you had with them, and they may even forget everything you did for them, but they will never forget how you made them feel”.

“Being an RN is satisfying to me because of the opportunities it gives me to connect with people and have a positive impact on them in what may be the the most difficult time of their lives. I thank God for blessing me with compassion, empathy and the knowledge to help others every day.”

“It’s rewarding to care for patients and their family members in their time of need. A difference can be made for every patient with anything from a small, comforting gesture to a lifesaving intervention. Regardless of what is needed, it’s a special thing to have the privilege of being a part of their experience.”

“Many times over the years patients have asked me why I became a nurse and I would think about it and the only response I had was “this is what I was meant to be when I grew up.” If I can make a patient or even a family member better and help them deal with the process of healthcare, I have done my job and it is a great feeling. I also get that feeling when I transport a patient to rehabilitation, a specialty clinic, home or even to hospice, I become part of their journey and it is very rewarding feeling. My mom always tells me, I am earning my wings.”

“I think nursing goes beyond administering medications and charting assessments. Its about being that trusted and learned friend who will always be there for you even when everyone else has turned their back. If you can reach into someone’s life at their darkest hour and let them know they’re not alone, you will have helped them in a way no medication ever could. People never forget moments like that.”

“Nursing is a unique career that offers rewarding and challenging opportunities to help people in a variety of settings. My experience working with physicians in hospitals as well as attorneys in the legal arena translates into a perfect fit as a Nurse Paralegal.“

“I feel my background as an RN has been most rewarding as it has allowed me to learn so much about humanity, the goodness in people, the strength and courage that others have when dealing with difficulty in life. I am a caretaker by nature. I have a passion to help others and certainly this is the role of a RN. As a Flight Coordinator/Nurse Case Manager for Angel MedFlight, having the nursing background helps me understand the clinical situation of our patients and how a flight impacts their current clinical state. It definitely helps when dealing with other healthcare providers when coordinating transport for patients. It also allows me to help out my non-clinical colleagues by assisting in interpreting things, obtaining patient report and communicating with our medical crews.”
– Jennifer
Flight Coordinator, Case Manager, RN, Angel MedFlight
“As a past flight nurse of 10 years, I have seen the side of our medical crews and how relieved the patients are to see the flight team when we get there. They usually are very excited once the crew arrives. This gives me a little edge when I speak to our potential clients as I know how most of them are feeling when they call.”
– Richard
Flight Coordinator, Case Manager, RN, Angel MedFlight
“Nursing as a whole is about caring. It’s about caring for patients and their families as a whole. There is nothing more rewarding than watching interventions in place and seeing holistic care improving their lives.”
